OH OH OH !!!
Merry (Christmas) or more appropriately Merry Saturnalia festival of the winter Solstice HO HO HO!!!

.

Let’s get this out of the way first, Christmas and Xmas are the same thing. The X in Xmas comes from the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter of the Greek word ” Xpioto’s,” translated as Christ.

.
CENTURIES BEFORE the birth of the baby Jesus, Pagans would bring evergreen trees into their houses in the month of December. As decoration and to celebrate the arrival of the winter solstice, they would also ask their various pagan gods for a bountiful harvest the following season.

.
The practice continued in various forms thru out the Ages. The ancient Egyptians worshiped their SUN GOD RA with palm leaves and evergreen trees. The early Romans decorated their Homes and Temples with evergreen for part of a Pagan festival called Saturnalia the festival of Saturn, the god of Agriculture.

.
The Vikings of Scandinavia believed that evergreens were the special plant of their God Baldur, and they burned Yule logs in feast until the last ember burned out. The actual Christian tradition of the Christmas tree began as late as the SIXTEENTH CENTURY in Germany. Christmas trees were still seen as pagan in the U.S. until the 1840’s.

.
The winter Solstice not the baby Jesus most likely accounts for the selection of December 25th. as Christmas day. Late December was when the days once again began to be noticeably longer, and the sun ceased its movement to the south. So the winter Solstice was celebrated for the birth of the SUN, it just is not the SON most religious people have in mind.

.
America did not even declare Christmas a national holiday until June 26,1870. The exchanging of gifts, Pagan in origin, stemming back to the festival of Saturnalia and originally banned for that reason by the Catholic church in the middle ages.
Christmas carols trace back to the middle ages as well, not as religious songs, but as common folk songs, sung during harvest festivals. They were only incorporated into worship by religious figures like Martin Luther.

.
Mistletoe was once considered a mysterious and magical plant by the Druids and the Greeks and a Pagan symbol of life and fertility. In Scandinavia mistletoe was considered the plant of peace, under which enemies could declare a truce, and arguing spouses could kiss and make up. So basically the Christian Christmas traditions actually have nothing to do with Christ and were taken lock stock and barrel from Pagan traditions.

.
Also you think Christmas has become secular and too commercialized you would be wrong. Saturnalia turned Christmas has nothing to do with secular society too much anymore. It is not a big holiday for the secular as much as for the Christians who stole it and made it theirs. Christmas or the winter solstice was ruined specifically because Christians have taken the festival and turned it in to a Christian holiday of commercialism, decadence, pageantry and a proselytizing event for a Bronze age Palestinian cult.
